Jasprit Bumrah is yet to join the Mumbai Indians camp and the seamer is likely to link-up with the squad in Ahmedabad, venue of their IPL 2024 opener against Gujarat Titans, on March 21. Bumrah is on a break after featuring in the fifth India-England Test in Dharamsala, which ended on March 9, and is very much fit and available for MI’s tournament opener on March 24.
“Yes, Jasprit Bumrah will join the team directly in Ahmedabad on March 21. He will have good two-three days of practice there before the first match vs Gujarat Titans on March 24,” informs a source close to developments.
MI’s pre-season camp got underway in Mumbai on March 12 and most of the players and members of the support staff have been in attendance since then. Former captain Rohit Sharma checked in on March 18 but there is no clarity on when Suryakumar Yadav would be able to join the team.

Surya yet to start batting
It is understood that the 33-year-old underwent a fitness assessment at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) on Tuesday but wasn’t able to meet the parameters required to get a clearance. The right-hander is likely to undergo another assessment in a couple of days’ time and both NCA and MI are likely to follow a patient route.
Surya has been undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA after undergoing sports hernia surgery in Munich in January. The versatile batter had also injured his ankle during the third India-South Africa T20I in Johannesburg on December 14 and has been missing from action since then.
It is learnt that the right-hander is yet to start proper batting in the nets but the fitness test failure on Tuesday is not a major concern as there has been no recurrence or aggravation of his injuries.
When asked about Surya’s status at MI’s pre-season presser, head coach Mark Boucher said they are awaiting updates from the Indian cricket board.
“We are awaiting updates on Suryakumar from the BCCI. We have always been under a cloud of fitness issues but we have a world-class medical team. We may lose one or two in terms of fitness but we have to move on,” Boucher had said.
Business as usual continued at the MI camp and the players had an optional session on Tuesday. The squad is likely to play some practice matches before getting their IPL 2024 campaign underway.
