Lucknow Super Giants star batter Ayush Badoni was on fire for the South Delhi Superstarz in the Delhi Premier League 2024 match against the North Delhi Strikers on Saturday (August 31). In the match played at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, the right-handed batter scored 165 runs from just 55 balls to help his side post a record total of 308 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. During his stay at the crease, the 24-year-old right-handed batter hammered 8 fours and 19 sixes.
His 165-run knock helped him break Shreyas Iyer’s record of highest score in T20s by an Indian batter. Iyer had amassed a total of 147 runs for Mumbai against Sikkim during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match played in Indore on February 21, 2019.
In addition to that, Badoni also broke former West Indies batter Chris Gayle’s record of most sixes in an innings during a T20 match. Gayle had smacked 18 sixes for Rangpur Riders during the Bangladesh Premier League match against Dhaka Dynamites in Mirpur on December 12, 2017.
Gayle’s record of 18 sixes in an innings was equalled by Sahil Chauhan of Estonia in Episkopi on June 17, 2024, during a T20I match played against Cyprus.
Highest partnership in T20s
During his stay at the crease on Saturday, Badoni added 286 runs for the second wicket with Priyansh Arya. The 286-run stand between him and Arya is a new world record for highest partnership in T20s.
The previous record of highest partnership for any wicket in T20 cricket’s history was held by Japan’s batting duo of Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake (134) and Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming (109). They had added 258 runs for the first wicket during the T20I match against China in Mong Kok on February 15, 2024.
Like Badoni, Arya also scored a century on Saturday, and the duo helped the South Delhi Superstarz post a total of 308 runs on the board, which is the second highest total in T20 history.
Six sixes by Arya
Priyansh faced a total of 50 balls and scored 120 runs. During his stay at the crease, he scored six sixes in one over bowled by North Delhi Strikers spinner Manan Bhardwaj to equal Yuvraj Singh’s record.
