Kolkata Knight Riders won their first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) title by beating the defending champions Chennai Super Kings, by five wickets on this day in 2012. A buoyant Gautam Gambhir-led side produced a clinical performance to claim their maiden IPL trophy in 2012.
It was Manvinder Bisla who came up with a scintillating batting to guide the Kolkata-based franchise to their first IPL title on May 27, 2012. Bisla played a fine knock of 89 as KKR won the IPL 2012 summit clash by five wickets. Bisla was also adjudged the Player of the Match for his stupendous knock.
Chasing a target of 191, KKR scored the winning runs with two balls to spare.

Winning the toss, the then Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni decided to bat first. The move did pay off as CSK got off to a flying start. CSK’s opening batters—Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay—stitched a solid partnership of 87 to earn an advantage for CSK. Vijay (42) was the first one to depart as Kolkata Knight Riders’ Rajat Bhatia claimed a vital breakthrough.
Michael Hussey continued his onslaught and breached the 50-run mark. Hussey and Suresh Raina forged a terrific partnership of 73 off 41 balls. Hussey, however, failed to survive for long as he was the next to return to the dressing room. Jacques Kallis dismissed the Australia batter for 54. Raina pulled off a crucial knock of 73 to help the Chennai Super Kings in posting a solid total of 190.
MS Dhoni came up with a handy, unbeaten cameo of 14 off nine balls. For Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajat Bhatia, Jacques Kallis and Shakib Al Hasan picked up one wicket each.
Kolkata Knight Riders had a terrible start to the run chase having lost their skipper Gautam Gambhir for two in the very first over of the innings. It was KKR wicketkeeper Manvinder Bisla and Jacques Kallis who weathered the storm by forging a handy partnership of 136. Albie Morkel broke the partnership by picking up the wicket of Bisla.
With nine runs needed off the final over, Kolkata Knight Riders’ Manoj Tiwary hit two consecutive boundaries to secure the IPL title for his side. Tiwary remained unbeaten on nine off three balls.
