Rohit Bhai Said, ‘You've No Idea What You've Done’: Rishabh Pant Recalls His Gabba Heroics Ahead of BGT 2024-25
Ahead of his third Test series in Australia next month, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant reflected on that iconic Gabba performance.

Rishabh Pant’s heroic innings at the Gabba will forever be etched in Indian cricket history. His fearless knock on the final day of the Brisbane Test against Australia in 2021 secured a historic victory for India, dismantling the aura of the ‘Gabba fortress’. Pant’s unbeaten 89, anchoring a chase of 328, brought the formidable Australian bowling attack to its knees and delivered India a 3-wicket win, clinching a second consecutive Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Australian soil.

This tour cemented Pant’s position as India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman in Tests, a position he has held with unwavering determination. Even after a horrific car crash sidelined him for more than a year, Pant announced his return with a characteristically scintillating century in the recent Test series against Bangladesh, which India comfortably won 2-0.

Ahead of his third Test series in Australia next month, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman reflected on that iconic Gabba performance. Speaking at Star Sports’ ‘Star Nahi Far’ event, Pant recalled the praise showered upon him by Rohit Sharma and his own initial inability to grasp the magnitude of his achievement.

“I always strive to give my best, but some performances stay with you forever. The Gabba Test is one such memory,” Pant admitted. “At the time, I didn’t fully comprehend its significance. Rohit bhai (Sharma) told me, ‘You have no idea what you’ve achieved.’”

“I was puzzled, thinking, ‘My goal was simply to win the match.’ But Rohit bhai insisted, ‘Later, you’ll understand.’ Now, whenever I hear people talk about the Gabba Test, I realize what he meant and how momentous it truly was.”

Pant concluded that memorable tour as India’s highest run-scorer, amassing 274 runs in 3 matches, including two half-centuries, at an impressive average of 68.50. His Gabba heroics, however, transcended mere statistics, becoming a testament to his extraordinary talent and unwavering self-belief.
