'Shreyas Iyer is Worthy of Indian Captaincy in Future': KKR Coach Chandrakant Pandit Backs Skipper for Future Success with India
KKR coach Chandrakant Pandit expounded on Iyer's excellence as skipper, as he recalled the personal journey Iyer had to take on since his snub by the BCCI earlier this year.

Failures are stepping stones to success. Shreyas Iyer has surely inherited the same and proven it for the cricketing world to see, as the Indian batter, months after being dropped by BCCI, led KKR to a stellar third IPL title this season.

Iyer may not have had the best of seasons with the bat, as the skipper managed to notch a relatively low 351 runs in 14 matches in the group stage.

But, Iyer’s contribution as captain cannot go understated, as the Indian batter led KKR to 9 wins in 14 matches in the group stage, before displaying excellence with his decision-making and bowler rotations, especially in the playoffs this season.

KKR coach Chandrakant Pandit expounded on the same, as he recalled the personal journey Iyer had to take on since his snub by the BCCI earlier this year.

“Any player would be disappointed with that (Iyer’s BCCI contract snub). However, that should not affect his performance. Whenever we would discuss anything, we would never touch upon that point. We were clear that the task at hand was more important,” stated Pandit in an interview with Times of India.

“I remember that he told me: ‘ Sir, I’ll prove it.’ The way he has batted in this IPL, he now seems to be a more matured, sensible batsman.”

Pandit then commended Iyer for his exceptional captaincy throughout the season and also made the bold claim of stating that Iyer would one day be potentially fit to take over the Indian cricket team as well.

“I would give a lot of credit to Shreyas. He’s been a fantastic captain, very calm and cool. He was receptive to our suggestions and handled the team well on and off the field. With KKR, he showed the qualities which make him worthy of India captaincy in the future,” stated Pandit.

Much credit was also shed on mentor and former KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir, who Pandit described as a motivational presence in the locker room.

His presence in the dugout was a great motivation for everyone. It was a great boost for us. He came in with a lot of cricketing experience. He’s been part of the IPL for so many years. We took all the decisions collectively.
