Shubman Gill revealed what head coach Rahul Dravid said to him after he helped to steer India to a series victory with a hard-fought five-wicket win over England on day four of the fourth Test at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Monday.

Resuming from 40/0, India slipped from 84/0 to 120/5, including losing captain Rohit Sharma for 55. But Gill, who remained unbeaten on 52 and Jurel, who made 39 not out, kept their calm to stitch an unbroken 72-run partnership for the sixth wicket, to complete a tricky chase of 192. The result also means India sealed the series with an unassailable 3-1 lead with a game to spare in Dharamshala, which starts March 7, especially after losing the opening Test in Hyderabad.

Gill took to social media to reveal what Dravid told him.

“If not you, then who? If not now, then when?” – Rahul Dravid,” Gill’s Instagram caption read.

Shubman after the win, said he had planned not to lose his wicket to an lbw decision come what may, despite the odd ball keeping low and turning sharply.

“I had a plan for the off-spinners — I planned that I am going to the keep the LBW out of the game. I have always played off-spinners stepping down the wicket and in this game, I just had to execute that and just be calm and not be too tentative playing the off-spinners,” said Gill to JioCinema following the hard-fought win, which gave the hosts an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-Test series.

Gill indicated there were no demons in the wicket and it was “good” for batting.

“I think when you are playing on a wicket like this, you just have to keep the cracks out of the game. I mean, if the ball hits the crack, you can’t do much about it. But, if the ball didn’t hit it, then I think it was a good wicket to bat on,” Gill said.
