The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on the lookout for Team India’s next head coach as Rahul Dravid’s extended tenure ends after the T20 World Cup 2024. Though applications have been invited applications for the post, it has been learned that the BCCI is looking to consider former New Zealand captain and current Chennai Super Kings head coach, Stephen Fleming as Dravid’s potential successor.
According to Indian Express, Fleming is being considered as a suitable candidate for the role. His track record with CSK in the IPL, man management skills and abilities to bring out the best in young players have prompted the BCCI to have him on board.

The report further stated that informal discussions have already taken place during the IPL. However, Fleming hasn’t conveyed to the franchise about any wish to leave. It is yet to be seen whether the New Zealander applies for the job.
It has also been learned that apart from Fleming, no other foreign coaches are interested in taking up the India job as it demands them to be on the road for 10-odd months. If the BCCI fails to get Fleming on board, it will be interesting to see where it all heads.
Dravid was handed a six-month extension post the 50-over World Cup in October-November. His contract will expire after the T20 World Cup next month. The former India captain can re-apply for the post.
May 27 is the deadline to apply for the post.
Fleming – A force to reckon with
Fleming has been the most consistent coach in the IPL history, guiding CSK to 5 titles and a couple of Champions League trophies. Besides the Chennai-based franchise, the former Kiwi skipper is also the head coach of Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket – both of which are sister franchises of CSK. Fleming has coached Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash for four years and is also associated with the Southern Brave in The Hundred.
