Dhoni, in a surprising move, stepped down from CSK captaincy on the eve of IPL 2024 opener that saw the defending champions beat Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.
Dhoni has handed over the captaincy to the young Ruturaj Gaikwad who began his rein with a six-wicket win over RCB. With the announcement of Dhoni stepping away from the team captaincy, speculations are rife on the legendary cricketer’s future and IPL 2024 could well be the final season of his playing career.

Dhoni has brought back his vintage look – long hair – that made him a fan favourite when he first walked onto the international stage.
He wasn’t needed with the bat in CSK’s season opener but did take two catches behind the stumps besides effecting a run out.
The wicketkeeper-batter first made his name as a hard-hitting batter before settling into the role of a finisher. He had a highly successfull stint as India captain, helping the team win two world cup trophies – ODI and T20I- and Champions Trophy title win in 2013.
Dhoni has led CSK to joint-most five IPL titles and will be hoping to retire on a high with the franchise aiming to defend their title.
CSK will next take on Gujarat Titans on Tuesday at home before taking on Delhi Capitals in Vizag and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad.
