'What Mad Ball Striking!': Yuvraj, Sehwag, Steyn React as Sunrisers Hyderabad's Record-breaking Show Sends Internet Into Meltdown
A sensational batting display from Sunrisers Hyderabad as they racked up their second 200-plus total of IPL 2024.

Sunrisers Hyderabad batters created history in their first game of the IPL 2024 at home as they combined to break a 13-year-old record. Put in to bat first, SRH batters pummeled Mumbai Indians bowlers at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday to post a jaw-dropping total of 277/3 – the highest ever in IPL history.

Heinrich Klaasen led the assault with a breathtaking 80 off 34 but his run to half-century was funnily the slowest of the innings with Abhishek Sharma hitting the quickest ever fifty by an SRH batter taking 16 balls to do so which was an improvement over the 18 deliveries that Travis Head had earlier consumed to reach fifty of his own.

MI captain Hardik Pandya used six bowlers during SRH innings and only Jasprit Bumrah went under 10 an over. Kwena Maphaka, the 17-year-old debutant, had a nightmare, leaking 66 runs from his four overs – the most expensive by a debutant in IPL history.

Both MI and SRH started the season with a defeat. MI lost to Gujarat Titans while SRH suffered a narrow defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders.

“We got the best groundsmen in the world,” Klaasen quipped in a chat with the broadcasters after the end of SRH innings. “It was an unbelievable wicket. Our top-order set the tempo at the front. We have incredible batters up at the top.”

Their effort bettered the previous record of 263/5 set by Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2013 against the now defunct Pune Warriors India. It was the contest that saw the legendary Chris Gayle blasting an unbeaten 175 off 66 deliveries to set the record for the highest individual total in T20 history – a record that is yet to be surpassed.

SRH batters smashed 18 sixes and 19 fours between them and opener Mayank Agarwal will be disappointed at having missed out on milking runs on what has been a belter of a wicket. He managed 11 off 13 before being dismissed.

Former SRH captain Aiden Markram was also among the runs, hitting an unbeaten 42 off 28.
