Hasan Mahmud left India gasping for breath after knocking over the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant in the first Test in Chennai on Thursday.

Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud left India wobbling after he got rid of their star batters, including captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, with the first Test getting underway in Chennai on Thursday.

Under overcast conditions, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto opted to bowl first and Hasan backed the call by troubling the India top order by getting the ball to move with the opening pair of Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal making a cautious start at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

He could have Rohit out earlier had but for the umpire’s call. The disappointment didn’t last long as he then had him nicking one to the slip cordon to be caught for six.

Next man Gill played a poor shot as his attempt at a flick shot resulted in an edge and wicketkeeper Litton Das did the rest sending the no. 3 back for a seven-ball duck. Kohli didn’t stay long either as he walked back on six, becoming Hasan’s third victim.

After a bit of a recovery by the Indian batters, Hasan picked the wicket of Rishabh Pant after lunch, when then wicketkeeper played a lazy cut shot, only to be caught behind for 39.

Who Is Hasan Mahmud?

The 24-year-old pacer has been making the right noise ever since making his international debut in March 2020. In the first four years of his career, Hasan played just white-ball cricket for Bangladesh but impressed the team management enough to merit a Test debut against Sri Lanka earlier this year.

He repaid the faith with a maiden five-wicket haul in Tests during Bangladesh’s historic 2-0 clean sweep of Pakistan in August and finished with eight wickets from the series. He entered the Chennai Test with 14 wickets from three matches at an average of 25.

Hasan has 30 wickets from 22 ODIs and 18 wickets from as many T20Is. The youngster is also known for his fielding too. The early years of his international career have been quite promising giving Bangladesh hopes of a bright fast bowling future.

In 20 first-class matches so far, he has 63 wickets at an average of 28.76 including one five-wicket haul.
