In the Gaya district of Bihar, a woman of age 30 is visiting schools to get enrolled. The woman, Shabina Khatoon, is a resident of Chakand village in the district. She got married at a young age and was studying in class 9 at that time. Now, Shabina is the mother of four children, having an elder son of about 15 years old while the youngest is four years old. Her husband works as a labourer in Delhi. Since childhood, Shabina had a desire to study but due to early marriage, she couldn’t complete her studies. Now, after over a decade and the responsibility of a family on her back, Shabina Khatoon wants to study again. In a bid to complete her studies, Shabina visited various schools in the Gaya district but was unable to secure admission on the grounds of age and other reasons.
Shabina is now pleading with the district administration to provide her with an opportunity to study to become a teacher or nurse. With such professions at hand, she believes she can take proper care of her children. Currently, Shabina works at a doctor’s office in Chakand Bazaar and also goes home to study her children at this age. While talking to Local18, Shabina Khatoon said that apart from the district school, when she went to Hadi Hashmi School and inquired about enrolment, she was turned away citing age as the reason. She also heard comments like ‘What will you do after studying now?’ while she requested admission to the school institutes.
“I want to study, but why the school teachers do not want to teach is beyond understanding,” said Shabina Khatoon while talking to Local18. She further told the media that her father was very poor and was an Imam in the mosque.
Due to poverty, her family could not educate their children and hence got their children married at an early age. However, a teacher of a reputed school in the Gaya district advised her to enrol in the state government’s Bihar Board of Open Schooling and Examination Centre. There are many such schools in Gaya district which are associated with it.
