The Bihar government has taken a unique initiative to make higher education affordable in the state. BTech studies now can be done for just Rs 10 per month and polytechnic studies for Rs 5 per month. State Science and Technology Minister Sumit Singh said that arrangements have been made for admission in engineering and polytechnic colleges through lateral entry in the state. According to the latest report, an engineering college has been established in each district of Bihar, where students have to pay only Rs 10 per month. This fee is being taken as token money. According to the fee structure of Gaya College of Engineering, only Rs 10 per year is charged from the students as enrollment fee. Tuition fees are charged at Rs 120 per year, that is, Rs 10 per month. Other fees like university registration, examination fee, and development fee also have to be paid. Students living in hostels have to pay hostel and mess charges separately.
Admission facilities have also been provided through lateral entry in engineering and polytechnic colleges in Bihar. In the academic session 2023-24, 3,733 students took admission through lateral entry, out of which 2,572 took admission in BTech and 1,161 in Polytechnic. Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Council (BCECE) conducts the examination for this process.
Lateral entry is an admission process through which students get direct admission in the second or third year of a BTech or polytechnic course without studying the first year. This facility is for those students who have already completed a related diploma course or equivalent course, such as a Polytechnic Diploma.
For the current session 2024-25, counselling is going on for 12,280 seats in BTech, 13,912 in Polytechnic, and 386 seats in MTech. With this initiative, a big step has been taken towards making technical education accessible and affordable in Bihar.
According to reports, there are about 70 plus best engineering colleges in Bihar. Of these, 52 colleges are owned by public or government organisations, 20 colleges are privately owned, and public-private entities own 1 engineering college.
JEE Main is the most accepted entrance exam in top engineering colleges in Bihar. Some of the popular colleges include IIT Patna, NIT Patna, Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, IIIT Bhagalpur, Mahatma Gandhi Central University, Bakhtiyarpur College of Engineering, Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology, and Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra.
