Choreographer Ganesh Hegde's Directorial Debut to Go on Floors This Year After 9-Year Delay | Exclusive
Ganesh Hegde reveals what caused a 9-year delay in his directorial plans. He has gone back to the drawing board with his script to keep up with changing times.

In 2015, ace choreographer Ganesh Hegde revealed that he was set to make his Bollywood directorial debut but his plan didn’t materialise. But the time has arrived when he’s finally ready to revive the project that will see him donning the hat of a director for the first time. The choreographer, who is the name behind popular numbers such as Chammak Challo (Ra.One), Oo O Jane Jana (Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya), Aaj Mein Uper (Khamoshi: The Musical) and Alchoholia (Vikram Vedha), exclusively tells News18 Showsha that his debut film as a director is ready to go on floors this year.

“There are two subjects I’m working on in a parallel manner. The shoot of one of them will definitely start this year. My mind is occupied with both of these projects,” says Hegde, who recently choreographed the tracks, Va Va Voom and Dhishoom Dhishoom, for The Archies.

But what caused a nine-year delay in his directorial plans? “My script was ready and we were about to finalise everything before the Covid-19 pandemic. But then, everything shut down. After the pandemic, the film industry was recovering slowly. 2023 can be called the best year for our industry after the pandemic. The audience going to the theatres has decided that they only want to watch a certain kind of film. That’s why a maker needs to be very choosy about the narrative that they want to showcase,” explains Hegde.

He admits that the script he was working on a few years back might necessarily not be relevant anymore and stresses the importance of keeping up with the changing times. “Some big films which were supposed to do well didn’t. On the other hand, the audience spent about a thousand crore watching certain films. We need to be very careful about the stories we want to tell and how we want to tell them,” he says.

“You need to think through whether a script that you thought about five years back will be relevant in today’s time and whether it’s a subject that will get a good opening. And people today have the option of watching a film on OTT four to five weeks post its theatrical release,” he adds.

Though he’s unsure about the release route he wants to take for both of his films, he’s currently in the process of ‘a small rework’ on his script. “We need to go back to the drawing board to decide what the correct course is for the subject we want to tell. If it’s not viable for theatres, we need to come up with a plan to release it on OTT. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I know that if I want to do something different, I’ve to be patient and wait for my turn,” Hegde remarks.
