Milan: AC Milan defender Philippe Mexes has been suspended for three games after video evidence showed he struck Juventus striker Marco Borriello in a Serie A match.

The Italian League said its disciplinary tribunal, basing its decision on video evidence, had found the Frenchman guilty of violent conduct, for punching an opponent in an off-the-ball incident during Saturday's 1-1 Serie A draw with Juventus.

The referee did not see the incident in the hotly-contested encounter on Saturday, which finished 1-1 after both sides had goals wrongly disallowed.

Mexes lashed out at Borriello at the start of the second half. The pair were teammates last season at Roma.

In its verdict, the tribunal said Mexes had punched Boriello in the side, knocking him to the ground.

The suspension imposed on Monday comes as Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic returns from a three-match ban for hitting Napoli defender Salvatore Aronica.

Juventus were fined 10,000 Euros after their fans chanted racist insults at Milan players during the same game, while Lazio were fined the same amount for ethnic insults by their fans against Fiorentina.

Serie A leaders and defending champions Milan are a point above Juventus, having played a game more.
