How to Install the NewsGuard Extension
How to Install the NewsGuard Extension
NewsGuard is an extension for Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Chrome that evaluates news sources and classifies them as trustworthy or not. It is available to all Microsoft Edge users for free, non-commercial use but requires a subscription otherwise. This wikiHow will show you how to install the NewsGuard extension.
Steps

On PC/Mac/Android

Go to https://www.newsguardtech.com/. This website has the download link that will work anywhere.

Click on Download. This will open the extension in the appropriate app store (or download it directly). If opened in an extension store, choose Add to [browser] or Get/Install to install the extension onto your computer. NewsGuard is available for Safari, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Firefox. You can learn more about and download these browsers by clicking on the links.

Turn the extension on. When prompted to do so by your browser, choose Turn on. This is not necessary on Safari, where installing the extension automatically enables it.

On iOS

Download Microsoft Edge. This extension comes as a feature with Microsoft Edge on iOS/Android (along with Adblock Plus). NewsGuard is not available on Google Chrome, Safari, or Firefox on iOS because apps are not allowed to install extensions or other apps; it is only available preinstalled on Microsoft Edge.

Tap on the triple dots in the corner, then choose "Settings".

Choose News rating then turn the "NewsGuard" toggle on. This will turn the NewsGuard extension on.

Evaluating a News Site

Check the extension icon. If the icon is green with a ✔, then it means that NewsGuard views the source as trustworthy. If the icon is gray with an ℹ, then it means that NewsGuard identifies the source as user-created, meaning there may be lies on the site. If the icon is red with an ❗, then the source is unreliable and/or untrustworthy.

Click on the icon for details. It will show you everything NewsGuard evaluated about the source to determine whether it can be trusted or not.

Click on the icon to submit a website for review. If the icon is not colored, then it means that NewsGuard did not review the source yet. You may want to submit it for review if you think the source could be unreliable or untrustworthy.

What's your reaction?
