While the dish is commonly found in a Maharashtrian household, it is prepared as a festive dish during Ugadi, Ganesh Chaturthi and Gudi Padwa. Let us take a look at the easy and simple recipe for making this sweet and flavourful flatbread that is convenient to make and serves as a healthy food option.

Ingredients required

1 cup – Chana dal (soaked)

2 cups of water

2 tablespoon – ghee

3 cup – Jaggery

1/4tsp – Jaiphal or nutmeg powder

1/2tsp – Cardamom powder

1/2tsp – Ginger powder

A pinch of salt

1 cup – Maida or Whole wheat flour

1tsp – Oil

How to make it?

First, add the Chana dal to the pressure cooker and cook it till 3-4 whistles. Then drain the water and mash the lentils coarsely.

Now add Jaggery (gud) to the mashed lentils, mix it nicely and let it cook for some more minutes.

Also add cardamom powder, ginger powder, and salt along with grated nutmeg to the mixture. Remember to keep stirring in a low flame until it gets dry. Then switch off the gas and let it cool.

To prepare the dough, knead the maida or whole wheat flour by adding ghee and salt to it. Cover it and keep the dough aside for a few minutes to get it fluffy.

Now divide the dough into small balls and flatten them with your palms. Add a little ghee and one teaspoon of the mixture that you had set aside to cool. Nicely seal the edges like one prepares the aloo paratha.

Then roll the small balls into the shape of a chapati and cook it for a minute on the tawa or pan smeared with ghee.

After making the puran poli or bobbatlu, serve it with badam milk or aamras.
