BERHAMPUR: To give fillip to sports, games and spot latent sporting talent, the Ganjam district administration has decided to construct 1,000 playgrounds in different villages. Under an integrated development programme, the playgrounds would be constructed in the villages where there is no scope to promote sports and games, said Collector Krishnan Kumar. He said ` 5 lakh would be spent on the construction of each playground. The funds would be sourced fromMGNREGS. The grounds would facilitate football, volleyball, kabaddi, hockey, athletics and other outdoor games. Trees would be planted around the grounds so that these would double as boundaries in future. The grounds would be constructed as per the recommendations of panchayats and duly endorsed by palli sabhas under the supervision of BDO concerned. The grounds are to be completed by June 15. Kumar said while the aim was to throw up champion sportspersons and athletes, the construction activities would be carried out by manpower without using machines as per MGNREGS norms.
