NAMAKKAL: At least once in two days or three days a fatal mishap is reported in Namakkal district. Rash driving, lack of discipline and violation of road rules claimed the lives of 141 persons in the first four months of this year.According to statistics gathered by the District Crime Records Bureau, 33 persons died in January involving 31 fatal mishaps and 173 men and women injured in 121 non-fatal accidents. In February, 40 lives were lost in 40 fatal mishaps and 144 injured in 99 accidents. In March, 36 persons died and 193 were injured in 35 fatal and 124 non-fatal accidents.However, the trend showed a decline in the month of April in which 32 died in 32 fatal mishaps and 152 were injured in 120 non-fatal mishaps.2010 tops listIf the last three years’ statistics is reviewed, 2010 tops the list with the highest number of casualties - 482 in the district. A total of 454 fatal and 1467 non-fatal mishaps were reported. Apart from the lives lost, 2014 were injured.In the previous year, 442 lives were lost, 40 less than 2010, in 406 fatal accidents and 1958 were injured in 1411 mishaps. Three-hundred-and-thirty-five persons died in 318 fatal accidents, and 1902 were injured in 2008.Statistics from the Crime Records Bureau points that most of the accidents involved lorries. In 2008, accidents involving lorries stood at 359. It was 352 in 2009 and 380 in 2010. Two-wheelers were involved in 520 mishaps in 2008, 531 in 2009, and 566 in 2010.A senior police officer said the department had been contemplating an action plan to save lives by preventing accidents and would post more traffic sergeants to regulate traffic.
