Michael Perham is attempting to become the youngest person to sail solo.

New Delhi: A 16-year-old boy from Hertfordshire in England is attempting to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world.

The existing record was set in 1999 by 18-year-old Australian Jesse Martin. And to break it, Michael Perham will have to circumnavigate the globe for approximately four months. During that time he will stay in touch with his family through satellite link-ups.

Perham is already the youngest person to cross the Atlantic. He did that when he was 14, and now plans to not only set a new world record but also use the trip to raise money for charity.

In order to achieve the record, Michael's journey must be entirely unassisted and be completed under sail by wind and muscle power alone.

During the trip Michael will cover 21,600 nautical miles. He will cross each line of longitude and also the Equator.
