NAMAKKAL: In a fresh crackdown on unauthorised dyeing units in the district, officials from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) demolished 18 such units on Thursday.According to district environmental engineer of the TNPCB K Gokuldas, who led the team of officials, “Eighteen polluting dyeing units, including 43 winches and 36 tanks, were brought down.” Heavy security cover was provided in Ottemethai, Vediarasanpalayam and Arasankadu areas of Pallipalayam to deal with any possible trouble from the owners of the units, said Gokuldas.Thiruchengode revenue divisional officer Kavitha, assistant engineer of the TNPCB Cheralathan and Tiruchengode Deputy Superintendent of Police Sujatha supervised the drive.The crackdown was initiated by the TNPCB following a directive by the Madras High Court to take stern action against those dyeing units that discharge untreated effluents into the Cauvery. The officials have been keeping up the heat against such units for the last three months.
