CHENNAI: Eighteen alleged land grabbers, including two DMK functionaries, have been arrested in the past two months, after the city police received 141 land grab complaints and, after thorough verification, registered 16 FIRs.The man who has topped the land grabbers list is a former DMK councillor and TVK Nagar circle presidium leader P K Rajendran (57). He was reportedly running a party office on encroached land in Perambur worth about Rs 2 crore. He allegedly encroached upon the land belonging to the Railway Police and built a shopping complex there. Rajendran and his brother Govindaraj were reportedly earning Rs 60,000 per month as rent from the shops.The Railway Police had put up a tough fight against the encroachment but Rajendran allegedly used his political clout to silence them. However, as soon as Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa ordered a crackdown on land grabbing, Railway Police personnel, Santiago, preferred a complaint with the Central Crime Branch, Land Grabbing Unit of the city police on June 26.During investigation, the police found that Rajendran, in connivance another DMK functionary, Prabhu, who runs a TASMAC bar in the locality, created fake documents and got the land registered in his name.In another case, Perungudi Panchayat DMK secretary V R Senthil and DMK councillor for Ward 9, S V Ravichandran, had threatened a doctor, Thirumangai, and her daughter, and forced them to part with properties worth `3.5 crore in Perungudi at a much lower rate than the market price.Investigations revealed that Ravichandran allegedly cheated and sold the lands of many others who did not have a legal heir in Perungudi area and constructed a luxury bungalow in Velachery. While police arrested Senthil, Ravichandran got anticipatory bail from Madras High Court.
