Kolkata: A 62-year-old woman who was gang-raped last month died at the Calcutta National Medical College Hospital on Monday.
She was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition and passed away after battling for life for the last 26 days.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that she was gang-raped - in an act of revenge - because she protested against a man for harassing local women after consuming alcohol – almost every day.
She also took the matter to the local police, but her plea fell on deaf ears.
The incident occurred on July 6 when the elderly woman was alone in her house in Sandeshkhali’s Majherpara village in North 24 Parganas. Her son Brij Dulal was out for some work.
The accused, identified as Rajeshwar Maity (52), along with his friends, barged into her house and raped her one by one. They allegedly tied a rope around her neck and inserted an Iron rod into her private parts for raising voice against them.
Her screams echoed around the locality, prompting locals to rush to the spot and take her to a nearby healthcare centre. When the woman's condition deteriorated, she was referred to the National Medical College Hospital, where she breathed her last on Monday.
The accused, Rajeshwar Maity, was arrested after a few days of this incident, others are still absconding.
Speaking to the News18, woman’s son said, “This is a horrific incident. How can someone rape an elderly woman? This is an act of a demon, and we want a stern action against all accused. If required, we will approach the state government for justice.”
“The accused are trying to use their clout as they have connections in power corridors here, he said, adding that such incidents were never heard of in Bengal and occurred rarely. "I want the state chief minister to personally intervene into the matter.”
