Jaipur:BJP leader L K Advani appealed to Muslims on Wednesday to introspect whether their "negative outlook" towards the party had helped either the community or the nation.
Advani, before rushing to Mumbai to see Pramod Mahajan, also asked Muslims to voluntarily give up their claim to the Ram temple site in Ayodhya to open a new chapter of amity and goodwill.
"I would like my Muslim brothers and sisters to ask themselves if the Congress really deserves their support after its irrefutable record of betrayal and its contribution in keeping a majority of Muslims poor and backward even after 60 years of Independence," he said.
"I appeal to the Muslim community to introspect if its negative outlook towards the BJP has helped either itself or the nation at large," Advani said.
He said it was time to start a new trust-based relationship between the BJP and Muslims to promote communal harmony and inclusive development and to rid the Indian democracy of the curse of vote bank politics.
Advani said the cause of India's security and development will be greatly benefited by strengthening the common national identity.
"Religious rights and identities of various communities that constitute the great Indian family must no doubt be protected. But these identities should have no place in politics," he said.
"We are not against minorities, but against minorityism. We will fight it tooth and nail," Advani added.
