THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is expecting a decrease in the rainfall activity in the coming days, while afternoon thundershowers will continue. After triggering widespread heavy rainfall in the state, the low pressure system, developed over the south-west Bay of Bengal, has weakened to a trough of low pressure and moved westwards towards Lakshadweep. Though the heavy downpour activated by low pressure will weaken by Saturday afternoon, the IMD has issued a 48-hour heavy rainfall warning again on Friday. “The low pressure system has weakened and moved towards Lakshadweep. The rain will weaken by Saturday afternoon,” said K Santhosh, director of IMD.“The upper air cyclonic circulation associated with the low pressure system will trigger heavy rainfall at isolated locations. So Met Department has issued a 48-hour warning. We will analyse the situation on Saturday morning and withdraw the warning, if the system weakens,” he said. Meanwhile, the afternoon thundershowers are likely to continue for two more days. “A trough running from Telangana to south peninsular region will provide afternoon thundershowers in the coming days,” he said.Aluva (8 cm), Kodungallur and Piravom (7 cms each) recorded very heavy rainfall on Thursday. All major stations recorded rainfall on Friday. MERCURY LEVEL DROPSThe heavy downpour and cloudy atmosphere have brought a temporary respite from the scorching summer heat. All Met stations in the state have recorded below normal temperature for the past two days. Some parts even recorded a maximum temperature of 2 to 5 degrees celcius below normal. Kannur recorded maximum temperature of 28 degrees celcius on Friday. This is 6 degreed Celsius below normal. Punalur too recorded maximum temperature of 5 degrees below normal. It recorded 30 degrees celcius on Friday. “There was a change in the maximum temperature. Most stations recorded below normal temperature owing to heavy downpour and cloudy atmosphere. This is a temporary change,” said Santhosh.
