Lucknow: A 15-year-old girl succumbed to burn injuries at the Safdarjung Hospital on Thursday, two days after she was set ablaze allegedly by unidentified men in Agra, police said. The incident comes just days after a B.Tech student was gang-raped by four men in new Agra area.
The Class 10 student was on Tuesday waylaid by two unidentified men, who allegedly poured petrol on her and set her on fire with a lighter. She had suffered 55 per cent burn injuries, including facial burns, and her airway was also burnt due to smoke and fumes which was creating a problem for her to breathe, a doctor at Safdarjung Hospital said. Late at night, she was put on ventilator, but she could not make it and died at 1.30am, he said.
The girl was initially admitted to the SN Medical College hospital in Agra, but was later referred to the Safdarjang Hospital in New Delhi, police said, adding that they were on the lookout for the accused.
The two incidents have triggered off a political slugfest in the state, with former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav attacking the Yogi Adityanath government for the deteriorating law and order situation. “The two incidents where a girl was burnt alive and another incident of gang rape shows how criminals in the state are in high spirits. This situation can come only under two circumstances — one where the anti-social elements do not fear the government anymore and other where they have got the protection of the government."
The Congress also attacked the state government, with UPCC spokesperson Dr Manju Dixit saying, “The girl, after she was burnt, somehow managed to reveal that two people would follow her and had even pushed her cycle. The girls are so unsafe in this regime that now they are being burnt alive." The deceased girl’s mother, meanwhile, said the culprits could not be identified as they were wearing helmets.
