Toronto: A suspicious package, which forced an India-bound Air India flight from Toronto with about 150 passengers on board to return, was not an explosive device but a "uniquely packaged" set of tools, police have said.
"The preliminary stage of the investigation indicates that the package was not an explosive device; it contained some tools that were uniquely packaged," police said in a statement.
"The investigation is continuing to determine how the package made it onboard the aircraft," they said.
Flight 188, with 149 passengers and 11 crew members, which left Toronto's Pearson Airport at 0745 hours IST on Tuesday was an hour into its flight to New Delhi, via Birmingham, England, when a passenger informed the flight crew of a suspicious package in one of the toilets.
"Somewhere over Montreal, a passenger was in one of the bathrooms and noticed what he believed to be a suspicious package," the statement said.
The pilot then decided to return to Toronto where the plane was taken to a remote airport terminal and evacuated.
