New Delhi: Faced with ever-increasing patient inflow, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) plans to have a separate facility to cater to out-patients inside its sprawling campus. The country's premier institute also started work on its campus in Jhajjar in Haryana and outreach OPD services are being made available for patients.

"We have increasing number of out-patients and we plan to have a separate facility to cater to them. It is still at planning stages, but we will build the facility soon within the campus," Prof RC Deka, Director, AIIMS, told a press conference in New Delhi.

He said patients from across the country come to AIIMS for treatment and that there was a need to expand facilities at the campus to cater to the growing needs of the people. Last year, the AIIMS reported a net death rate of below 3 per cent with a combined crude infection rate of 8.3 in the hospital, he said, adding that the death rate at main hospitals was low.

Deka said the institute's 40th Annual Convocation will be held on Tuesday where President Pranab Mukherjee will deliver address and present degrees to 465 medical professionals. He also said in the last year, AIIMS attended to over 25 lakh patients in OPD and casualty ward, while it admitted over 1.7 lakh people.
