PUDUCHERRY: Notwithstanding the allegations of poll code violations, the election authorities on Tuesday accepted the nomination of AINRC candidate A Tamilselvan along with six other nominees for the October 13 Indira Nagar by-polls. According to official sources, the nominations of Tamilselvan, V Arumugham (Congress), A Venkateswaran alias Suttukeni Bhaskaran (AIADMK), V Kalainathan (BSP), R Shanmugham (Indiya Jananayaga Katchi), D Tamilselvam and S Veeraghavan (both independents) have been accepted. The withdrawal of nomination is slated for September 29.Congress and AIADMK had petitioned the Election Commission on Tuesday to reject the candidature of AINRC, alleging poll code violation by the party President and Chief minister N Rangasamy and his party’s candidate during filing of nomination papers here on Monday. Both the Congress and AIADMK claimed that Rangasamy used his official red light car to take the party candidate and three others inside the premises of the labour complex to file nomination. The second alleged violation was barging into the chamber of the Returning Officer, when the Congress candidate was filing his nomination papers. The Indira Nagar by-election is crucial for Chief Minister N Rangasamy and his AINRC as his party needs to win the seat to post a majority in the 30 member Assembly. The party now has a strength of 15 along with the support of an independent in the house, which has now has 29 members. The opposition comprising 14 members is divided as Congress (7), AIADMK (5) and DMK(2). Winning the by-poll would give them a majority with 16 members, while losing would put them at par with the opposition. In such circumstances , the government would not have majority which would make passing of bills in the Legislature difficult. Further it runs the risk of losing majority, in case the independent MLA supporting the government withdraws.
