NEDUMBASSERY: Around 12 international flights were either diverted or delayed owing to closure of the runway. Domestic flights from Chennai and Bangalore were delayed for a long time on Monday morning after the incident. In the domestic sector, as many as 15 services were disrupted. The flight of Oman Air WY 223 from Muscat and Kingfisher flight IT 4429 from Bangalore landed at the airport at 12.40 pm. The Srilankan Airways flight UL 165 from Colombo landed at Kochi at 1.30 pm, said Airport director A C K Nair.A number of other international flights, including Qatar Airways flight QR 267 Kochi - Doha, Air India Express flight IX 543 Kochi - Muscat and Saudi Arabian Airlines SV 779 Kochi - Riyad - Jiddah, were reportedly cancelled after the incident. The averted tragedy at CIAL on Monday morning turned out to be a rare visual experience for people staying nearby. People from nearby areas came to the airport to have a glimpse of the aircraft which is in a nose-dived position. Though there were earlier incidents of aircraft skidding off the runway at CIAL, it was for the first time that such a major incident occurred. Around three years ago a flight with Gulf passengers had skidded off the runway. It was around two weeks ago that an aircraft skidded off the runway at Agatti airport in the Lakshadweep islands. The DGCA, which ordered a probe into the incident, has suspended two pilots - the captain and co-pilot - in connection with the incident.
