CHENNAI: The fight for justice for Anand Jon, the India-born fashion designer who is languishing in jail in the US on charges of rape, gathered momentum in the city as his family and well-wishers launched a Trust for the cause on Thursday.Sashi Abraham, Anand’s mother, said that the launch of the Trust would give the much needed support as Anand’s case comes up for trail on December 5 in New York. She said, “All the past years, it was just me and my daughter Sanjana knocking at the doors for justice. I am overwhelmed by the support of the people and am hopeful that this Trust will give the much needed morale, financial and legal support to bring the truth out and to prove Anand’s innocence.”S Vijayaraghan, lawyer and the man behind the Trust, said, “I am not looking at the case of Anand Jon emotionally. We have enough material evidence through Internet chat messages and phone calls to prove that he has been framed and was sabotaged by the industry, which couldn’t stand his quick career climb.” He observed, “It is really sad that the US justice works on the jury system and the verdict was given by the jury to whom the right evidences and truth were not presented. There is clear medical evidence to prove that rape had not happened and Anand had taken a lie detector test on it, while the girl who has accused Anand of rape has refused to take a lie detector test.”Sushashini Maniratnam launched the website www.justiceforanandjontrust.com. Many personalities from film and other walks of life showed up at the launch. The trust plans to create a positive public opinion of Jon and also to raise funds to fight the battle legally. At the event, Anand spoke to his mother over the telephone and thanked the people present for standing by him. He was arrested in March 2007 and convicted in November 2009 in Los Angeles on charges of sexual assult and sentenced to a 59-year prison term.
