Andhra School Girls Threaten to Boycott Sankranthi Festivities if Parents Fail to Build Toilets
With an aim to make the state completely open defecation-free, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has set March 31 as deadline for construction of toilets in every home in the state.

Prakasam (Andhra Pradesh): Nearly 100 girls, who are studying at the government-run Kasturba Gandhi Residential Girls School in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh, have asked their parents to built toilets at home, else they would not visit home for the annual Sankranthi festival.

In their letter, the girls wrote:

Dear Mom & Dad,

I am happy in school and hope you are also doing well. I am writing this letter to tell you that we do not have toilets at home. I am requesting you to built toilets for better hygiene and good health of all of us. If toilet is not constructed, I will not come home for Sankrathi festivities..."

With an aim to make the state completely open defecation-free, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has set March 31 as deadline for construction of toilets in every home in the state.

He has even threatened to sit on protest and hunger strike if the target was not achieved.

"I will sit on a silent dharna. I will also observe a day-long fast. At least then you will show some pity on me and build toilets. The state's prestige is being lost and your health is getting affected. Let us all think of a Swachh and healthy Andhra Pradesh. I have taken up this task as a spirited movement," the Chief Minister had said at 'Janmabhoomi' meeting at Itchapuram.
