THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ‘Know what goes into your plate!’- raising the slogan, the students of Christ Nagar International School (CNIS) Kowdiar have aptly named their Annual Science Fair, all set to be hosted on Friday, ‘Bhakshya-2011’. Food will be the highlight of the science fair, where the experiments and displays lined up by students would focus on the unknown aspects of the food that is consumed. Various aspects like production, distribution, preservation, storage, nutritional and medicinal benefits of the four subdivisions of food, namely, fruits, vegetables, meat and milk products and cereals, would be projected in the fair.Students also have experiments and displays to enlighten visitors on the ill-effects of the overdose of pesticides, fertilizers and food adulterants. Latest developments in cultivation and genetic modification of food would also be presented in easily understandable forms. The students have been grouped into various ‘Houses’, named Nile House, Ganges House and so on. Each house would deal with a specific topic related to food. Like, the students of Nile House would focus on the proteins and vitamins in fruits and about apple mummies, fruit jewellery lemonade volcano, fruit cosmetics and much more in their section ‘fruit-o-mania’.Being self-sufficient in vegetable production is the motto of the Ganges House students. Information on techniques of terrace gardening, organic farming, hydroponics for growing vegetables, vegetable dyes for fabric painting, vegetables as negative calorie food for the health conscious and much more would be lined up at the ‘Veggie galore’.‘Chick-n-cheese’ is the non-vegetarian counter where the students of Volga House would feed visitors with the information on the most sought-after food in the city today. Facts and fiction on milk, fish and meat would be unveiled. Cereals and pulses form the basic food of the majority of the world’s population. Students of Amazon House are bringing some amazing facts on the production, distribution and nutrition of the staple food at their counter ‘Vigna Radiata’.Apart from these, stalls will be put up by the Milma, Horticorp’s Apiculture Department, Swadhista mushrooms, Fresh-cut Vegetables and Chemical Laboratory, who would be displaying their products and demonstrating their techniques. Kuttanad Food Fest, a special charity run by CNIS Charity Fund, would be the highlight of Bhakshya-2011. Lekshmi Nair, principal, Law Academy here, will inaugurate the science fair, which will be held at Christ Nagar International School. The fair will be open to schools from 8.30 am onwards and to the parents and general public from 1 pm to 3 pm.
