Mumbai police have arrested three persons from Haryana in connection with the chat on Clubhouse app, in which obscene comments were allegedly made against women, an official said on Friday.
Personnel of the cyber police station of the Mumbai crime branch made the arrests late on Thursday night, he said. Two of the accused will be produced in a local court later in the day, the official said.
The audio conversation in the Clubhouse app were shared on social media where the participants could be heard about torturing women. Three accused: Akash, Jeshnav and Yash Parashar have been arrested by the Mumbai Police from Haryana. Reports said that Yash Parashar, a law student, was the moderator of the chat.
“We have registered a case against a vulgar Clubhouse app chat and arrested one person from Karnal, Haryana and is taken to 3 days SIT remand. Two other accused have been picked up from Faridabad and the process for their transit remand is in progress,” Milind Bharambe, Joint CP Crime said.
The joint Commissioner of Police also said two chat rooms were created in the clubhouse app on January 16 and 19 where participants were involved in derogatory statements about women.
“There were many participants in the chat room involved in giving derogatory statements about women and talking about auctioning female body parts,” he added.
In a tweet posted early this morning, Shiv Sena’s Rajya Sabha member Priyanka Chaturvedi praised the city police for the arrests in the case. “Kudos @MumbaiPolice, they have got cracking on the Clubhouse chats too and some arrests have been made. Say no to hate. #Clubhouse,” she said in the tweet.
On Wednesday, the Delhi police had written to the Clubhouse app and search engine Google, seeking details about the organiser of the alleged audio group chat in which “obscene comments were made against Muslim women”.
Official sources had said that the police had also identified some members of the group audio chat, which included men and women from both communities, as part of the investigation.
A Mumbai-based organisation had lodged a complaint with the city police on Wednesday in connection with the Clubhouse app, seeking its deactivation, and also registration of a case, the official said.
This comes days after hundreds of Muslim women were listed for auction on the Bulli Bai mobile application with photographs sourced without permission, and doctored. The app appeared to be a clone of Sulli Deals which triggered a similar row last year.
