CHENNAI: In a daring incident, a history-sheeter was chased on a busy street and hacked to death by an armed gang in broad daylight at Washermenpet on Monday. Two persons were arrested in connection with the murder.According to sources, victim V Anandraj (38) was a resident of Cemetery Road in Royapuram and worked as a loadman. Anandraj had several cases, including attempt to murder and extortion, registered against him. There was professional rivalry between him and another gang and during a recent drunken fracas, he had beaten up a member of the rival group.On Monday, Anandraj was buying a water satchet from a shop on Telugu Chetty Street in Washermenpet around 3 pm, when an armed gang emerged from an autorickshaw. They pounced on the loadman and attacked him with knives. Anandraj ran for his life, but the assailants chased him and mowed him down. The history sheeter, who suffered deep cut injuries, died on the spot.A police team led by Inspector R Gunavarman later recovered the body, sent it for post-mortem and detained around eight persons for questioning. During inquiry, it came to light that one of the suspects, Shankar (28), was beaten up by Anandraj and had enlisted the support of his associate Shanmugham (35) to take revenge and planned the attack. The duo was arrested.
