Mumbai: The merger of cricket with celluloid has already created history once. After the Oscar-nominated Lagaan, Ashutosh Gowariker is preparing for another sporting innings.
Gowariker, who is presently filming his magnum opus Jodha Akbar, revealed his desire to make another sports based film.
“I think film is a great medium to promote other sports in our cricket crazy country,” Gowariker said.
One of the Bollywood flicks that effectively portrayed the making of a champion was Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. Hollywood, on the other hand, has had a history of producing sports-based films in which the underdog conquers one and all.
While Gowariker is all praises for the earlier ventures, he is also keen to break away from the mould. He says his biggest challenge will be to write a story, not revolving around the underdog.
He plans to base his film on tennis, as he himself is a keen tennis player. Football is another sport the director feels offers directors opportunities to be creative and yet promote the sport.
Today, Ashutosh feels, his biggest challenge is to write a story, revolving around sport but furnish it with a fresh angle. “Sports films have had the same plot through the years…so I wish to make something different,” Gowariker said.
