New Delhi: The row over the construction of the Subansiri Dam in Upper Assam took an ugly turn on Wednesday. Around 3000 protesters from the Akhil Gogoi-led Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) clashed with police.
They allegedly blocked policemen who were escorting a truck that was carrying a turbine for the dam.
Sources say the police resorted to lathicharge and then blank fire.
According to reports more than 80 people have been injured in the clash.
Sources say that there were various groups participating in the ant-dam protest, including local public. The All Assam Students Union (AASU), Asom Jatiyotabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Takam Mising Porin Kebang were taking part in the protest, alongwith the KMSS.
The continuous protests against the construction of the dam have said to have caused major losses to the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).
The protestors are objecting to the building of the dam and have said they will not let any construction material reach the construction site.
Sources added that the NHPC has repeatedly sought the intervention of the administration regarding the many protests.
