In a major breakthrough Kasargod Police have arrested a 21-year-old astrologer for having links with the fake currency racket.
Gopalkrishna Pandith was arrested in Manipal by a special team led by Hosadurg circle inspector K V Venugopal during investigations into the `30-lakh fake currency notes confiscated by the Kasargod police last month. He was remanded to judicial custody by the Hosdurg First Class Judicial magistrate court on Sunday. Pandith is a close aid of fake currency kingpin Moidin Haji, who is reportedly based in Dubai and operating a fake currency racket.
With his arrest, the number of arrests made in the case has reached five. According to police, Pandith was extensively advertising his astrology business in Malayalam newspapers. Moidin Haji, who has close links with Udupi, became a client of Pandith and developed friendship with him. Raju, another aide of Moidin was arrested by the investigating team last month. Raju hails from Udupi and was introduced to Moidin by Pandith.
Earlier, Usman from Bantwal and Chetan Kumar were also arrested in this case. Police have been able to get important information from the duo, including the role of astrologer Pandith. Now the police team has left for New Delhi for further investigation. The fake currency racket was busted when Abdul Jabbar, a resident of Kaithakkad in Cheruvathur bought gold worth 1.8 lakh with fake currency notes. Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran on Monday hinted at handing over the fake currency racket case to NIA.
The latest investigations have revealed that the Indian fake currency is being imported from Pakistan to Dubai, and supplied to district via Mangalore.
