BANGALORE: Home, Transport and Bangalore Urban District In-Charge Minister R Ashok flagged off the services of two Atal Sarige buses in the city on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Ashok said, “The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation is a profit making organisation. But it is not our only aim. The new service helps labourers, slum-dwellers and others who cannot afford the normal bus rates.” The Atal Sarige bus service is aimed at poor, migrant and daily wage labourers and tickets in these buses can be bought at 50 per cent discount rates, the minister explained. Though BMTC is sure to incur losses with this service, Ashok stressed that Atal Sarige is service-oriented. “Yes, we will incur losses, but service to the poor is the intention of Atal Sarige,” he claimed. As of July 2011, BMTC’s margin on gross revenue stood at `255 lakh, he said. The subsidized bus service took off from Ashok’s constituency Padmanabhanagar. Hoskerehalli Corporator H Narayana and Padmanabhanagar Corporator L Srinivas were present on the occasion. The timings of the new saffron-green-white painted bus service are yet to be announced.
