New Delhi: A child right's commission has sent a notice to the school where an 11-year student died after being punished by her teacher and asked the police to probe her death.
The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights took took suo motu cognisance of media reports and sent a notice to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which runs the school.
"We have issued a notice to the principal of the school seeking an explanation as to what happened and why did it happen," Amod Kanth, chairperson of the DCPCR, told PTI.
"The Commission has also written to the Commissioner of MCD, who is required to conduct an investigation into the matter and report back to us within seven days," said Kanth said. Legal action would be taken after the MCD submits its report.
Shano, a Class II student of MCD primary school in Bawana, died in coma two days after she was allegedly slapped by her teacher and made to stand in the sun.
The girl's death sparked outrage with Union Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Choudhury saying that the authorities cannot "abdicate" responsibility by just suspending the teacher.
This is the third major incident of alleged brutal punishment in Delhi schools. In March 2008, a Class X student in Delhi, died months after she slipped into a coma. She had been hit by a teacher.
In October 2008, a Class IX student collapsed from a head injury after a teacher hit him with a piece of wood. In July 2007, a student lost vision in one eye when her teacher hit her with a cane.
