BHUBANESWAR: Doctors of the Capital Hospital here underwent a harrowing time since Monday night as a family levelled charges of baby swapping against them. The family alleged that their newborn boy was changed with a newborn girl. According to reports, one Pratima Nayak gave birth to a child late on Monday night. Another woman also gave birth in the delivery room of the Capital Hospital within a span of around 15 minutes. However, as babies were brought out after washing, Pratima’s in-laws alleged that she had given birth to a boy but was handed over a girl. Confusion prevailed even as the family began to charge the doctors and staff with swapping of the babies. The hospital authorities and staff have, however, denied any chance of swapping or change of babies during delivery. “The mother of the boy was immediately intimated as was the mother of the girl. We do not know how the latter’s family got the information that she had delivered a boy. However, to avoid further controversy we have reported the matter to the Capital police outpost,” Chief Medical Officer Dr Niramala Dei said. Both the women were also discharged in course of the day along with their respective babies.
