Bangalore: A right-wing activist has been arrested for allegedly making derogatory remarks against women and a community in his Facebook posts.
VR Bhat was arrested on Sunday and police are now considering invoking the stringent Goonda Act against him.
"We are examining the possibility of booking VR Bhat, the accused who launched verbal attacks on women and posted inflammatory remarks against a minority community on Facebook under the Goonda Act," Additional Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar told PTI here.
In a complaint filed with Chandra Layout Police Station, the woman alleged that Bhat, in his reply to her Facebook post, had made the objectionable remarks, according to Bangalore Police Commissioner MN Reddi.
A second complaint, filed by journalist Gauri Lankesh at the Basvangudi police station on August 2, pertains to alleged inflammatory remarks against minority community made by Bhat.
The police have registered a case under section 66 (A)(objectionable comments) of IT Act, besides sections 504(intentional insult to create breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), 109 (abetment) and 354 (A) of IPC, Reddi said.
