KOCHI: Books play a pivotal role in making education more effective and meaningful, said Pakistani writer and educationist Qaisra Shahraz.She was inaugurating the 14th DC International book fair and cultural fest at Marine Drive ground here on Monday.“We need books to promote education. As an educationist, I use all types of books as part of my profession. The world of books is still alive. Books will never die. Technology will take it up in the future. As a writer, I will keep on writing,” said Shahraz. She also praised Kerala for its beauty and high literacy rate. “I am amazed by the beauty of Kerala. Its greenery and dense forests are fabulous,” said Shahraz.Earlier, while delivering the keynote address, Union Minister of State for Food and Public Distribution K V Thomas said Qaisra Shahraz’s arrival has given a new dimension to the relations between India and Pakistan. “Malayalis are good readers who take books wherever they go, even it is in train, flight or bus,” the minister said. Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi commemorated renowned orator and writer Sukumar Azhikode, who died recently, at the function. Dr B Iqbal, writers Muse Mary and Sheeba E K were also present. The book fair in which over 350 publishers are participating will end on February 12.
