KOCHI: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will be able to complete the construction of the four bridges for the proposed Moolampilly-Chathanad four-lane road in three years provided the land for the project is made available. The announcement was made by former DMRC chief E Sreedharan following his preliminary study on the proposed project wherein he along with a team of MLAs, the District Collector and officials from the DMRC visited the site on Monday for the proposed four-lane road. In a media briefing after his visit, Sreedharan said the DMRC has given its in-principle nod to the District Collector to take up the construction of the four bridges. But he requested the Collector to speed up land acquisition for this. The work on the four bridges is likely to begin in a month, Sreedharan said. He said the funds for the project are already available with the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA) and since the GIDA has already obtained the approval for the project, further government delays would be minimal. “The Collector has been given the in-principle nod for the project takeover. We will have to discuss and finalise the terms of the agreement. But we hope to finish the paper work in a month and start the construction immediately thereafter,” he said. Sreedharan, who is currently the principal advisor to the DMRC, suggested that the work could be best done in two phases. Moreover, 15 to 18 culverts will have to be built during the process, he said. Once completed, the four-lane road will  connect the islands of Moolampilly, Pizhala, Valiya Kadamakkudi and Chathanad and make them accessible to the Ernakulam mainland through the Vallarpadom Container Terminal Road. The project has been taken up to ensure the welfare of the Goshree Islands in tune with the rest of the district, the former DMRC Chief said. The estimated cost of the project is `97.2 crore. The project for a four-lane road connecting the islands was approved at a meeting of the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA) in January. The GIDA had requested the DMRC to take up the construction of the bridges following which a high-level team of the GIDA  had earlier visited the site. The team which visited the site of the construction of the bridges, included MLAs V D  Satheesan, S Sarma and Hibi Eden, District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth and DMRC Project Director P Sriram among others.
