Mumbai: Four mediapersons were manhandled in central Mumbai on Sunday by men allegedly owing allegiance to the BSP.
Police, who were witness to the incident, did not do anything to stop the attackers, journalists present at the spot alleged.
Sudhir Sawant, who was sacked from the BSP a few days ago, had arranged a meeting at Shirodkar Highschool in Paral, central Mumbai, on Sunday afternoon.
Police had denied them permission to hold the meeting, so when meeting started, Sawant and his supporters were detained and taken away by the police. They were later released.
Immediately thereafter, another group of BSP workers started shouting slogans against Sawant. When the media teams rushed to shoot the incident, four persons from the mob assaulted cameramen Rajesh Chavan, Ravi Umbarkar and another photographer, said Kothekar.
Narendra Kothekhar, a reporter with a news channel too was manhandled when he tried to intervene.
All this while, the policemen present there took no action, he alleged. Later at the Bhoiwada police station too, the police initially refused to register complaint against assailants, he said.
Police sources confirmed the detention of Sawant and his supporters, but said no information was available regarding the assault on mediapersons.
The complaint was registered late in the evening against unidentified persons.
