THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Parasala police have registered a case against a police officer on charges of fleecing of money and excesses on the basis of a complaint filed by a woman of Chenkal locality. Parasala Circle Inspector Muhammed Riyas was charged by the police after a group of people owing allegiance to VSDP staged a police station march and dharna late in Saturday evening. Reeja, a 21-year-old woman from Chenkal, had alleged that the CI while investigating illegal sand mining on March 21, forcefully entered her house and physically attacked her. This was done despite her explanation that she had no knowledge of a vehicle which was parked in front of her house. The woman in her complaint alleged that the CI took away Rs 25,000 and RC book of a vehicle from the house. The FIR was registered after VSDP activists who staged a sit-in refused to disperse unless a copy of the FIR was provided to them. Finally, the police heeded to their demand and charged the officer on six counts. Certain top-level officers expressed resentment at the move of yielding to the pressure tactics. CI Riyas had played a key role in nabbing Bengal natives in the counterfeit notes case in the district. They said the allegation against the officer was fabricated.
