New Delhi: A Central Environmental Committee is inspecting the alleged environmental violations by the Uttar Pradesh government at the park located at Noida’s Sector 15A where many giant statutes of state Chief Minister Mayawati has been installed.

The committee, appointed by the Supreme Court, is looking into the legality of construction of statues in the Gautam Buddha Park in Noida. The committee will submit the report to Supreme Court detailing on what environment laws if any were flouted.

The report is expected to be submitted on Thursday afternoon.

The park is located just 20 feet away from the Okhla Bird Sanctuary which is home to some of India's most endangered birds.

Environmentalists have alleged that over 20,000 trees have been cut down to make way for the park which has 30 giant-sized statues of Mayawati and her mentor and Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram.

The Mayawati government reportedly did not take environmental clearances from Union Ministry of Environment and Forests for the construction inside the park.

Environmentalists say the large-scale concrete structures will raise the temperature of the surroundings and threaten the nearby sanctuary.

A two Judge bench of the apex court on July 10, comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam, had refused to stop the installation of statues of Mayawati and other Dalit leaders in Noida.

In the supplementary Budget presented by the state on August 3, a sum of Rs 550 crore has been earmarked for some of Mayawati's "dream projects" that include statues and parks in the name of Kanshi Ram, BR Ambedkar, Ramabai and Mayawati herself.
