New Delhi: The Government on Thursday decided to legally recognise Sowa-Rigpa, a traditional system of medicine practised in the hilly regions of the country.
The Union Cabinet approved amendments to the Indian Medicine Central Council Act, 1970, which would grant recognition to Sowa-Rigpa.
It is expected that the legal recognition to it will lead to the protection and preservation of this ancient system of medicine and will help in its propagation and development, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said after a meeting of the Cabinet.
The theory and practices of Sowa-Rigpa are similar to ayurveda and also include a few principles of traditional Chinese medicine.
It is practiced in hilly areas like Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Darjeeling, Lahoul and Spiti and Ladakh region.
