Chennai: Students allowed free MTC bus rides
The TN Transport Corporation has decided to allow school students in uniform to travel without paying for tickets.

Chennai: As the distribution of free bus passes has been delayed, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has brought in a new system to ease the suffering of students travelling by bus. The State-owned Transport Corporation has decided to allow school students in uniform to travel without paying for tickets.

“This came into effect from Friday. Students in school uniforms will be allowed to commute without purchasing tickets,” a senior MTC official claimed and added that confusions allegedly on part of the school managements had caused inordinate delay in the distribution process.

Meanwhile, MTC has sent a circular to various schools in the city, urging the latter to keep the students ready on a specified day for a photo session to facilitate the distribution of free bus passes this year.

Sources said agencies appointed for the purpose would provide the printouts of documents comprising the details and photographs of the students to the schools. After scrutiny of documents, the schools should return it to the MTC authorities, following which, bus passes would be issued in a day or two, the sources added.

As many as 3.8 lakh students in Chennai and suburbs are likely to receive free bus passes from MTC for this year.
