Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar assured protection to minority communities in the state on Wednesday and said the innocent would not be punished at any cost.
This comes in wake of the fear created among minority communities after the recent arrest of terror suspects. At an event organised by the Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation, he said, “Our government will ensure full protection to minorities.
We will not differentiate based on caste and religion. Innocent people will not be punished in the state.” Earlier, MLA Roshan Baig, who was a guest at the function, demanded that Shettar assure the minority community that police would not enter their houses without a warrant, arrest them or harass innocent people.
“If someone is really involved in anti-national activities, you shoot them or cut them into pieces. But one cannot tolerate if the innocent are punished based on religion. The government needs to create a sense of security among the community,” Baig said.
Baig even demanded the the government provide more educational loans for their upliftment. Shettar said compared to previous governments, BJP government has done more for the betterment of the community through its welfare schemes, and has allotted more funds for welfare activities.
“We have sanctioned Rs 723 crore for minority welfare in the last four years and 1.68 lakh people have benefited. Previous governments have sanctioned just `765 crore with total beneficiaries of 1. 31 lakh,” Shettar added.
