Beijing: South Africa was on Tuesday invited to take part in the next BRIC meet, an economic grouping of which India is a prominent member, to be held in China next year.
Chinese President Hu Jintao currently holding the rotating Presidency of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries has invited President Jacob Zuma to attend the summit, Chinese Foreign Ministry, Spokesperson Jiang Yu told a media briefing said.
She said South Africa has formally been admitted into the grouping after an agreement has been reached between all the four current members of the BRIC countries.
With the addition of South Africa into the grouping, the grouping from now on would be called BRICS.
The entry of South Africa into the grouping would contribute to the development of the BRIC mechanism and promote cooperation among emerging markets, she said.
"I would like to stress that the BRIC cooperation is marked harmony, stability, win-win approach, openness and transparency, she said.
